About This Poem

Interested in experimenting with meter and lineation, Williams sought to invent a new American poetics. His subject matter was often that of the everyday and the lives of common people.


William Carlos Williams

Born in 1883, William Carlos Williams was one of the principal poets of the Imagist movement. His major works include Kora in Hell (Four Seas, 1920), Spring and All(Contact Publishing, 1923),Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (New Directions, 1962), the five-volume epicPaterson (New Directions, 1963), and Imaginations(New Directions, 1970). Williams died in 1963 in New Jersey.
